How did Jacob ever get off the island to meet with the candidates to persuade them to go the island?

Like Ben said in the last episode, Jacob made the rules. He was trying to keep the candidates on the island, and that was why it was so hard for them to get off. But because he was in control, he could come and go freely.
How did he get off though? Did he swim? Did he have a boat? I'm probably over thinking this, but wouldn't people notice his coming and going? Where did he get money from? Does he have special powers?
